The Bridgewater Treatises

The Hand by Charles Bell

Published at the bequest of the Earl of Bridgewater, under the auspices of the Royal Society of London, each work in this series was commissioned to explore "... the Power, Wisdom, and Goodness of God, as manifested in the Creation; illustrating such work by all reasonable arguments ..." Eight titles were published, with topics ranging from astronomy to man.

A near fine copy in 3/4 brown-black leather and marbled boards, simply ruled in gilt on spine with gilt-lettered red label; some edge-rubbing to corners and spine ends; 2.5" stain to fore edge of front board, with minor spotting along top margin. Brown endpapers, bound without half-title; contents clean and bright.

Bridgewater Treatise, no.VII. 2 vols. Illustrated with twenty engraved plates depicting various creatures, from worms to birds. A near fine copy in 3/4 brown-black leather and marbled boards, simply ruled in gilt on spine with gilt-lettered red label; light scuffing to spine and minor rubbing to corners and spine ends. Brown endpapers, bound without half-title; text excellent.

A near fine copy in 3/4 brown-black leather and marbled boards, simply ruled in gilt on spine with gilt-lettered red label; two very small scuff marks at top of vol.2 spine; spine ends rubbed; some pages creased at top edge of vol.2, resulting in "ding". Brown endpapers, bound without half-title; text very lightly foxed.

Bound without half-title; contents bright, tight and clean.
